I disavow the idea that we should allow for assisted suicide. I have met in my time physicans who have blatently overdosed patients with cancer or other terminal illness with narcotics in order to bring a hasty end to their suffering. Perhaps in a few cases, meer days were stricken from the patients future. I have never felt this a topic to pursue, but as this is the comment in the previous blog entry, I will try to do justice to this on here. I disavow "suicide machines". Mental suffering which I have indeed myself endured at some extent is troubling and painful. I must say that I have not had the terrible misfortune to have physical pain and suffering in my lifetime. I do not have a way to relate to that phenominon nor do I wish to think that I can "know someone elses pain". That said, I do believe that medical opiates and even artificial coma are a way by which a person can be relieved of their physical enduring pain. I would rather be put in a medical coma for my last days than have the opiates upped to the point that my respiratory drive is inhibited. Put me on a Propofol drip, knock me out and let me sleep my way until my body no longer can support life. I do not know what is current clinical practice, but I am aware I believe that this tactic is not a common consideration. Is it???????
I must say here that the historical event of the Macabees commiting suicide rather than allow the Greeks to bludgeon them in the day of futility was a heroic act. It was the best they could do. Their fate was ascribed. The hedonism and heresy of the Greeks at that day was so horrible that it would not allow for a peaceful or sane ending of the Macabees existence. I may or may not have done the same. I can not accumulate righteous thoughts on this matter as I can not understand how any person can look foward to a future of malignment, torture, disgrace and debaucherie like underpinnings to their solemn existence and life. I must say that I pray that this sitation will never occur in modern day society. I fear the regimes with tyrants and abusers of human rights who do indeed still behave in a manner similar to the Greeks in that year. I will assume that I will likely never endure (God willing really) any such event in my day. May we all say God bless America! God bless the Western World!
