Leviticus 19-27 states that one must not round off the edges of ones scalp and not destroy the edge of ones beard.
Why is this.
I have spoken with a rabbi in the ChaBaD who states this is "not law". His hair was cut on all sides with a 0 razor blade. (completely shorn). I wrote to what appeared an orthodox rabbinical website to ask the true Jewish view. http://www.dinonline.org/2010/12/26/leaving-the-sideburns-peos-harosh/ . Accoring to this site, one must keep at least half a centimeter of hair so as the hairs bend down upon eachother.
I believe that this commandment is necessary as to ensure the strength of ones mystical being. We are all mystical beings. Shaving the corners of your scalp decreases this and leaves you in an state of mystical infirmity (in my own beleifs). So in this regard, I completely disagree with the ChaBaD rabbi and feel that this in fact is a mitzvah that we must all regard as Essential.
I had thought that it was necessary to keep the hair at a longer length, say at least 3 inches to say you are abiding by this commandment. In fact, according to Din, even a half a centimeter is ok. Thus it woudl be realized that shaving ones peyos completely (unless attaining nazir status which we can not do at the present day due to the absence of a Temple) is completely contraindicated.
I personally keep my side curls today at 7 inches. I do believe that an increased length improves your strenth at a mystical level. This is indeed imporatant as your mystical strength influences the happiness of the other mystical beings that encounter you on a daily basis.
I also take this to mean that one must not destroy the edges of ones beard meaning: dont cut your beard at all. Modern Jewish aspirations have left many who wish to trim or shave their beard and modern jewish halacha has provided provisions whereby this is "socially acceptable". Same thing however, I believe it decreases ones mystical strength and health. This is a fact. I do not shave my beard at all and it is a comfortable length. I have found alot of people who wish to argue this fact with me, but fact is fact, mystical strength is the factor that one ideally wishes to seek.
