I have recently had an experience where I was a dinner guest at a party of "religiously aware and observant" people. One topic was presented and the spouse of the host defiantly remarked that she "hated black people". That "their music was offensive". That their "walking in neighborhoods was threatening". I am a physician. I took the hippocratic oath. It would be negligent for me to sit in the presence of such heresy and speak nothing. I said something. I was later asked to leave their home and leave the dinner party. Mission accomplished? I hope. I wrote to them later that I would never return unless they purchased a book on black history. I actually bought a book of black history myself. Its been almost 5 months and I have not heard an apology or had another phone call asking me for another dinner invitation. Thats ok.
That said, I believe that for those who harbor antisemitism, one should purchase a large book on the holocaust. I will not be privy to being your friend in any sense if this is your tune.
And for homophobia, I say you must make a financial contrubion to PFLAG. The parents and friends of lesbians and gays. This is about the only way that I can see that you can "atone" for your wrongdoing.
These are 3 big problems even today and its any doctors job or any person representing a legitimate religious faith to bring about the end to these 3 ideologies.
