The Chabad is the upcoming ultimate "premeir" jewish organization. They are on every continent almost and every street corner of the jewish community.
I am a non participant at this day and do not think that unless they continue to pursue any dialogue with me, that I would approach any of their institutions or rabbis.
For me, I have met a bland experience of discrimination against both myself as a physician, a jewish learner and as even a disabled American.
That said, this is my insight on the ChaBaD.
They are essentially a drill press for judaism. They drill themselves into every community. They drill themselves into the childrens futures.
The fact is Torah is not learned with a drill press. Torah is learned with caressing fingers and hopeful eyes.
I find that the Chabad is essentially trying to be a teething ring for judaism today and that it tries to make it super friendly and easy to "sort of be" a "Torah Jew". You get the tefillin (well thats the best they are doing) and you get a good service (their services were ok by me).
But the fact is that Torah is not given in a way to a baby's expression and we do not seek teething rings to be jewish.
The sad situation is that there are breakaway jewish movements which have saturated our homes with a less than ideal torah lifestyle if torah at all in some. It is an expression of ill will towards the true jewish orthodoxy that this has happened, but in reality there may have even been such stringencies in the new and newer rabbinic teachings that the fact is that Torah is no longer light enough for the common man to carry on his soul.
I have previously mentioned that the Rebbe's ways to me seem like more sugar than spice.
In truth, I feel that the ChaBaD will hold your hand (they pay for a lot of activities and experiences) but that they do not turn the light on for you.
